Today, I am going to show you how to start seeds indoors, so you can grow them for about six weeks and then transplant them into your garden. I have chosen these Sweet 100 Cherry tomatoes because they grow quickly and it is a good thing to demonstrate with.
But you can grow any kind of tomato, pepper, eggplant, just about anything you can imagine indoors. These are the ones is all that need a head start when you plant them into your garden.
One of the of the old time favorites is an egg carton. You can fill this with dirt and plant this full of seeds, so you can plant each one individually as you like. I have chosen a four inch pot.
So the first thing you do, is fill it nearly to the top with a good potting mix and tamp it down real good either to within about an inch of the surface of the pot.
Next, you take your seeds and sprinkle them evenly around the top of the potting mix. Then you put what I call the casing layer which is just about a quarter of an inch on top of that and tamp that down.
Next, you make a good marker then give it a good drink of water. This four an inch pot should require about a cup of water.
Two important factors in germinating seedlings are moisture and temperature. So to keep the moisture in, I like to make a miniature green house and this one gallon ZipLock bag works perfectly for that. Just put the entire container down in there and zip it closed.
Now if you don’t have a green house situation, I like to put this right on top of the heating pad and then in about a week, you’ll have seedlings ready to transplant into larger pots.
