While 50% of children with ADHD would eventually outgrow the symptoms, it is still important to treat kids with ADHD so that they don’t become antisocial or developed those self esteem.
A diagnosis of ADHD does not mean your child can thrive. People with ADHD tend to be intensively creative and more willing to take risks. In fact, Jetblue founder David Neilman has publicly stated that he considers his ADHD to be one of his greatest assets. Non the less most people benefit from treatment that reduces their symptoms.
The most successful treatments for ADHD combines three approaches, behavioral management strategies, medication, and colostrums accommodations. Your doctor will help you design a plan that works for your family. Expect to make adjustments along the way as you monitor your child’s progress.
The doctors can prescribe several different medications for children with ADHD. Surprisingly, stimulants like Insulin and Adderall have come ADHD sufferers by increasing the activity of the nervous system and improving focus. About 80% of patients on stimulant medications show significant improvements.
Non stimulants such as Strattera can assimilate results but with fewer side effects. In some cases, the doctor may also prescribe antidepressants. The effects of each medication will vary from child to child. So your doctor may try several combinations or dosages before finding the right course of treatment.
Behavioral management strategies help your child learn how to control his behavior. Begin by establishing rules. Let your child know what is and what is not an acceptable behavior. Reward your child for following the rules. And take away privileges for misbehavior.
Stick to a routine a consistent schedule will help your child remember for example at 4PM is homework time. Make sure the instructions like TV are not accessible when your child is supposed to be doing something else. Work with your child to find an activity in which she excels to help build up self confidence.
Children with ADHD are eligible for special services at school including extra time for test and shortened work periods to improve focus. Work closely with your child’s teacher who can provide support and keep you updated on your child’s progress. There is no right treatment for ADHD. It’s best to talk to a physician so you can tell her a plan that’s best for your child.
