How to Treat Asthma For most people with asthma especially if the symptoms are there several times a week or so. The main asthma medication is a daily asthma treatment to suppress the inflammation in the bronchial tubes. The type of medication that is very effective and is used most often is an inhaled Corticosteroid—a cortisone light medication that is in inhaler form. When this medication is inhaled or used once a day or everyday there is a very good chance of good control of asthma. There are other asthma controller medications for use everyday —Montelukast is an example of that. The second broad type of asthma medication that is used is our bronchodilator and these are short acting bronchodilators that could open up the airways and they last from 3 to 4 hours up to 6 hours or so and there are also long acting inhaled bronchodilators that can last 12 hours or even longer. Sometimes these medications are used in combination. I would add that Allergen immunotherapy or allergy shots can be an effective treatment for asthma especially if the person has particular sensitivities.
