Dr. Travis Stork: Okay, we have time for a one last 5-Minute Health Fix. I can't tell you how often I see injuries in the ER that occur in the home, especially Dr. Lisa, kitchen injuries.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Oh yes, and when it comes to burns, people still think it's best to put butter on a burn or put ice directly on a burn, and both of these are really bad ideas. I was actually talking to you once when I burnt myself in the kitchen. And basically, you don't want to put ice directly on it because you can cause it frostbite, you can deaden the skin with the ice, and if you put butter on it, you are basically going to increase the warmth or the heat in the burn and also it can breed infection in that burn as well. So that's why ice and butter--- No, no.
Dr. Travis Stork: Well, and ice isn't what you want, but you do want to use cool water. So let's say you are getting something out of toast or oven---- Oops! Before you know it you have brunt yourself. It is okay to submerge it in cool water for about 10 minutes, and after the cool water a cool compress is not unreasonable.
Here is the thing Aloe Vera antibiotic cream for superficial burns is a good thing, not butter. But don't pop a blister and use a non-stick bandage because if you've put one that sticks on to the burn, you rip it off, it can create problems. But here is the big thing, if you have extensive burns to your hands, to your face, go see a doctor.
