How to Treat Dry Eye Syndrome

Gladys: Hi! My name is Gladys from Newark, New Jersey. On or around my by 50th birthday, I began suffered from dry eyes syndrome. Is there anything natural that I could do or eat to ease these symptoms?

Muriel Schornack: Gladys, that's a great question. Many of our patients, in fact, do suffer from similar symptoms. Dry eyes syndrome is associated with female gender, perimenopausal women are more likely to be affected than younger women.

The environmental things that you can do to help yourself would be as follows. Number one, don't smoke. Number two; control your environmental humidity as much as you can. If you can increase water in the air, that lets more water stay on the front surface of the eye. Drink plenty of water throughout the course of the day, use lubricant drops as needed in order to keep your eyes comfortable.

There are some studies that are looking at the role of Omega-3 fatty acids in preventing or minimizing symptoms of dry eyes as well.
