Hi, I am Joe Graedon. I am a pharmacologist. I write the people’s pharmacy newspaper column and co-host the people’s pharmacy radio show. Ever since humans climb out of the caves, they have been suffering from heart burn, all that nasty mastodon meats is not so good on the stomach, but our modern day equivalent, hotdogs, are not any better. Of course as it turns out that carbs are probably the real culprits, we eat too much of that stuff. But what do you do when your suffering. Well, as it turns out that just about any of this antacids can neutralize stomach acids, whether its Maalox, Serc, Mylanta or Tums for the tummy or Rolaids. Even peptobismal can be quite helpful, that old familiar pink liquid. But for pennies a day, you know, you can just go to the kitchen and find some baking soda, sodium bicarb, has been used by generations of folks. The instruction are right on the label. If you have high blood pressure however, watch out because there is a little too much sodium to use this on a regular basis. Now, if your looking for something natural, you might want to try some canalile? or ginger tea, they have been used for a long time. The E stomach upset, or hear something you probably you have never heard of, sugarless gum, turns out that saliva, its your body’s own natural fire extinguisher. Just chew in some gum or some hard candy, that can also ease your pain. Now, if your really suffering from heart burn, well, you may need something stronger and acid suppressing drug and we got quite a few write-ups here. We have got the Tagamet, and the Zantacs, and the pepsids. The are all very effective, its suppressing the production of stomach acid. There is the new kid on the block, prisolec OTC all very effective but they take a little time to go to work, that’s right, kind of like this combined product is pepsid complete. Not only this is suppressed acid but it also antacids for immediate relief. Here is something pretty amazing. If you want instant release, you might try some yellow mustard. Hart to believe, but a teaspoon full of yellow mustard can also ease that heartburn pain.
