Male Speaker: Some people go to a drug store, and they don't want to use cough syrups and they see Afrin, which is a decongestant nasal spray, and there is some concern using that over a long period time, is that true?
Michael Marcus: It is true. Afrin, is a decongestant nose spray which does give you rapid relief of nasal congestion. The problem is that when Afrin wears off after using it, it can develop a rebound phenomena, where the act, where the congestion that you originally treated comes back and they come back even worse than the original treatment point. So you then use another doze of Aspirin, which makes you feel better until they rebound occurs, and then you need another doze of Afrin, and before you know it, you addicted to the Afrin and you can't come off of it.
Male Speaker: And usually a recommendation is only couple of days if use at all.
Michael Marcus: Exactly. When you use Afrin, and only use it when your nose is really congested and you just can't breathe from it. Never use it for more than two or three days in a row. Eliminating into a two or three day period, you minimize the risk of developing the addiction to the medication.
Male Speaker: If someone is using it constantly, the way to get rid off this dependency upon Afrin is what inhale nasal steroids?
Michael Marcus: Nasal steroids are the cure. So when you have this addiction to Afrin, a disease called rhinitis medicamentosa, the only treatment for it is one get off the Afrin, and substitute nasal steroids.
The nasal steroids actually help heal the new cause of aligning of the nose, preventing that rebound, so that you can safely come off the Afrin. And for being on the nasal steroids for two weeks, you can then safely stop the nasal steroids and not run the risk of having rebound.
