How to Treat Postpartum Depression

Melanie Raposo: Hi everybody! I'm Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. If you're experiencing postpartum depression symptoms that are lasting more than two or three weeks it's time to seek professional help.

Here are some treatment options that your healthcare provider may suggest. First join a support group is a great idea. Been able to talk to other women who are experiencing the same things you are is always reassuring. Recent research shows that antidepressants and talk therapy combine can also be effective in eliminating postpartum depression. And also don't be afraid to ask or accept help from others. Friends and family will always be more than willing to do anything they can to help you get to a speedy recovery.

And while your baby sleeps, take those extra minutes to relax and take a nap. Don't worry about the chores, they can wait. And if you can try to get out once in a while with your spouse, go to dinner or even a movie. Most importantly try to maintain a well balanced diet. That's always a good idea and especially for women with postpartum depression because it helps to elevate their mood and the general sense of well being.
