Obviously the best medicine is to prevent it, but what about when it does inevitably happen? I already have it, so now what do I do to decrease the irritation?

How to Treat Razor Burn

Chris: I am Chris from St. Petersburg, Florida and I was wondering what causes razor burn and what are some effective treatments? Michel McDonald: Chris, razor burn is caused when you are shaving. The hair as you remove it doesn't always get completely removed, it curls in on itself and it goes back into the hair follicle underneath the skin. When it does that, it forms a red bump and you get those bumps, so that causes razor burn. The best thing you can do for that is actually prevent it by being careful when you're shaving. You always want to use a clean razor with a fresh blade and disposable blades are better. You can also consider using an electric razor, those are better as well. And you always want to shave in the of the hair growth. Finally if use any sort of after shave lotion, you don't want to do that for at least 15 minutes, because they can occlude the hair follicle and cause razor burn to be worse.
