How to Treat Self Choking
Dr. Travis Stork: Would you know what to do? That’s what we’re covering today. And before the break, I mention how a simple chair could be a life saver in a very common emergency situation. Choking and we’re going to explain why. So, can get a volunteer from the audience? You want to come on up?
What's your name?
Sydney: Sydney.
Dr. Travis Stork: Alright Sydney. So have you ever encountered someone who is choking?
Sydney: Yes. I've actually been a victim of choking.
Dr. Travis Stork: Do you have any idea how you could use the chair if you had something that was preventing you completely from breathing?
Sydney: No, I had no idea.
Dr. Travis Stork: Okay, so, I'm going to have you do this with me, okay? Make a fist, put it in your hand like this, just above you navel, your belly button. You got that?
Sydney: Yes.
Dr. Travis Stork: Okay and what you can use a chair for is if no one else is around and you are choking on something, you can use the chair to give you abdominal thrust. Just by leaning into the chair, I want you to try this because by doing that, you’re pressing up against your diaphragm, forcing the air of your lung and will self propel out whatever object is blocking your airway. Thank you Sydney, very, very much.
Sydney: Thank you.
