Dr. William Meadow: If you’re born under 1 pound almost universally you will die. Interestingly if you’re born over 3 pounds likely to survival is over 95%. So the influence of birth and survival really occurs between about 1 pound and 3 pounds.
Dr. Jeremy Marks: The babies primarily have trouble with their breathing if they are born more than 8 weeks early. And so we often have to give them oxygen, and we have to give them a machine to help them from breath. Babies are also have trouble digesting their food because their intestines are not matured enough and also the brains are brains are very immature so they don’t know how to suck or swallow and they also not very good in maintaining their temperature.
Dr. William Meadow: Incubators are simply glass or plastic boxes that keep out noise them keeping humidity and keeping warmth, it’s a good idea for babies to be in incubators that have been known for 60 years, because babies who are cold doer’s babies who are dry doers.
Dr. Jeremy Marks: Babies get infections at the time of birth, because the membrane’s of the mother’s membrane’s rupture far took early, and if it rupture too early then bacteria can get in, and give the baby in infection.
Dr. William Meadow: We attempt to support the them and give them things that they will be getting in neutral, we give them nutrition, we can give them IV fluids, we can them IV minerals, vitamins, we can offer them special formulas or breast milk in clever ways to feed them because they are often too small to suck with the either a bottle or breast.
Dr. Jeremy Marks: We generally tell the mom that they will be going home rather about their due date if they are born significantly early, babies are surviving at far greater numbers, and then they did even 10 or 15 years ago. And that’s because our care and understanding of the problems he is getting better.
