Dr. Mercola: Hello, this is Dr. Mercola and I welcome you to this special holiday video update. As you can see I have dressed up in one of my special holiday tie with a snowman. So today I would like to talk to you about what you can do to help prevent and if you come down with treat the coughs and cold and flu’s that are so common this time of year. Why are they common? Well a number of reasons, one is because this is the shortest time of daylight in the year if you live in the northern hemisphere as most of you watching this video do. So as a result of not getting enough sun exposure that in sunshine under skin and those of us who live in north areas, we are not able to have our skin exposed to sun, our vitamin D levels go down and as a result of that -- that’s one of the primary reasons why the flu’s and coughs and colds are so common.
But one of the other reason are that we are exposed to a lot of stresses and especially around the holidays this is going to be a real challenge. Emotional disruptions can really impair your immune system and make you susceptible to the colds and these coughs and flu’s. Now it’s important to understand and recognize that it’s not the virus that causes the illness, that’s only a trigger, it’s an impairment of your immune system that makes susceptible to the infection which is the reason why you get sick.
So if you are not sleeping well which another major factor, so you can be the healthiest person of the world with the best diet, stress free but if your sleeping patterns are disrupted on a regular basis for a while, you are at high risk of getting sick and lastly but perhaps one of the most important physical reasons is that you are eating too much sugar, when you eat sugar then it will significantly disrupt your immune system.
So if you are already sick, one of the most important things you can do is stop eating sugar, at least until you are feeling better because that's going to make your system worse, your immune system that is, it's going to be more difficult to recover from the illness. Now if you were unfortunate enough and you are watching this video too late and you are already sick or someone you know is already sick, I want to give you a little hint that I found out about 4 or 5 years ago and I initially got this from one of my readers and it was the use of hydrogen peroxide, very safe, non-toxic just a regular grade that you can find in your local drugstore.
What you can do is you can pour a little of the peroxide in a little cap, the cap that it comes with, just pour it in there and then when you put your head to the side and just put a few little drops of it in your ear, you pour it in there and hold your head like that for as long as you can tolerate, for a few minutes or so you will hear some bubbling and that’s okay. But as soon as you put your head up it will fall out, so you want to leave it down there for a few minutes and then when that's done then you can try the other side.
Now I don’t know how or why this works and I am convinced this is not an urban legend because when I initially put this on my site about 4 or 5 years ago I actually took it down because I thought it was urban legend but then I got lots of feedback from my readers that this actually worked for them. There are a lot of anecdotal testimonials that we have. So it’s not dangerous anyway. It’s certainly not expensive, it just costs less than a penny to do this. It will take just a few minutes of your time, so if you ever do get sick, it's a simple, easy inexpensive, non-toxic trick that you can do but certainly you want to apply the other principles I mentioned in the beginning of this video and also address the factors that I addressed in this page. So when you follow those, it's just amazing, when you follow the right foods and you have got the rest of your lifestyle balanced you just don’t get sick anymore and that’s one of the signs that you know you are following a healthy lifestyle program.
