Do you have some old clothes that aren’t nice enough to donate or give to someone else? If so, don’t throw them in the trash. You can easily turn these old clothes into something useful like a wine or gift bag. This one bag is a two book fabric sealed at the bottom and tied with a ribbon at the top. To make this type of bag, you’ll need these materials. An old piece of clothing, big enough to cover whatever you’re wrapping, a cutting board, a tape measure or ruler, at least 30 inches of ribbon, stick pans, a needle or a sewing machine, thread, tailors chalk or a laundry marker which you can get it at a craft store, scissors or a rotary cutter and an iron, and an ironing board.
Start by ironing your garment so it lays flat then lying out so the hem of the bottom is further away from you. Next, mark the line where you’ll cut also known as the cut line. Using your tailors chalk or laundry marker, mark somewhere on the hem. Using your tape measure, measure a 15 inches along the hem, mark where that 15 inches ends. Measure 16 inches straight down from each point and make a mark. Measure to make sure the points are 15 inches apart from each other.
Using your tape measure or ruler, connect the marks to make a rectangle. Measure diagonally both ways to see if your rectangle is really a rectangle. The measurement should be closed if not the same. When you decide where to mark the cut line, work your way around stains, snags, and other mishaps. If you have to include a tear or a stain in your rectangle however, get creative with patches or contrasting color thread.
Now, cut along the lines you just made using your scissors or rotary cutter. Fold the rectangle in half right sides, the eventual outside of the bag facing each other. Pin the layers together along the cut edges. Place pens diagonally at each corner and perpendicular to the edge every one inch.
Don’t pin the hemmed edge, so the entire cut edge. If you’re selling by hand, use a running stitch. If you’re selling with the machine, use a straight stitch. Remember don’t sew the hemmed edge or you won’t be able to get anything in the bag. Turn the bag right side out, put your wine bottle in it. Finally, tie the ribbon around the top making sure the bottle neck is tied in the ribbon
