Hey. I’m Jake Chappell and today’s video is going to be about basing digital input and output. This is more like a complete beginner. So, if you already know about digital input and output, this video is not for you but if you are just starting out or just think this is something you might learn then go ahead.
Alright so first, let’s discuss the chords we’re going to be dealing with today. Basic digital input and output, there’s a lot of chords out there that look just like this one. You see the end of that? I believe that is called a 1/8 inch end right there. It’s either a 1/8 or ¼ but I think it’s a 1/8. I’m not really completely adequate on that but common headphones and various other chords generally have an adaptor with this end on it.
Occasionally, you come across chords one of these on it. This is mostly used in music so just plug your guitar in to your end and things of that nature. This is a ¼ inch of a leaf. And now I’m going to show you two adaptors. The first adaptor is this. Okay. This is a—you see the whole in the back. You probably can’t. There it is. Now, what you can do is take one of these chords and plug it into it and now you can plug this in to a different input and receive the audio through your headphones. So, that’s how you convert the input.
The other type, how would you get this into a smaller port like a headphone placed on your laptop? One of these, pop that in, and you’ve converted it down to a smaller size. I believe this is called a ¼ to 1/8 inch adaptor. And this would be the opposite of a 1/8 to ¼ inch adaptor.
So, now that you have the two basic chords and the two basic methods of conversion using these adaptors, we’re going to get into the actual input and out put itself. Okay. So first, let’s take a look at the laptop and you’ll notice we have a headphone and microphone ports down here. So headphones, you plug the chord in and you receive the audio through your headphones. So, that could be considered an output. The computer is outputting the audio through your headphones so this headphone spot here could actually be considered an output.
Now, microphone on the other hand, you’re plugging the chord in and you’re talking into the microphone and it’s going in to your computer. So, the microphone can be considered an input because it’s inputting the audio into your computer. So, you have output and input. Same goes for the common end over here.
You see there is a headphone slot which happened to be rather large. That’s why you would need that adaptor to put your 1/8 inch of foams in to the ¼ inch holder right there. And you have inputs. Now, these are obvious. They say input so you know that you’re putting things in to input audio in to the end. Headphones on here would be output.
So, what you can do with this knowledge? Well, say you want to play music off your laptop and have it come to the amps so it can get louder. Well, the first thing you want to do is get your chords.
So, you’re going to come over here. I’ll be needing this chord right here and the ¼ to 1/8 inch adaptor. So, the first thing you want to do is put this adaptor on one of the ends. Okay. Now that you have it on, you wan to plug it into a headphone slot. You want to be receiving output from the computer so that you can input the output in to the amp. Okay. So, find the headphones slot, plug it in there. We have it in. all right. On the other end, you’re receiving output from the computer’s output spot, now you want to put the input into an input port for instance, that one.
Now, you have to plug it in. you just want to turn on the amp. We’re hearing some audio out of here.
Okay so as you can see, we’re receiving the audio that’s coming out of the amp. And I could actually hear how that sound’s coming from the microphone on this—but as you can see, it is a success and now that you know this basic information, you can apply this to pretty much anything. Anytime you find the headphone port, it can always be considered output. And using these chords and adaptors, you can connect things and receive different input and output through different devices.
