Mike: With digital music now, some people have big collections. Like myself, I got about 12,000 songs.
AJ: I don’t know how you listen to that many songs.
Mike: I don’t. I just like collecting them all. How many do you have, like 3?
AJ: Yeah. 3 songs I love to listen to everyday.
Mike: Over and over again.
AJ: That’s it.
Mike: You don’t really need an iPod.
AJ: One time I did a road trip where I drove up and I guess I had the loop on, you know, the radio. But I took video as I was going up there, so I showed my friends the video and they're like, you listen to the same song for an 8 hour drive. And I didn’t realize it. That’s a true story. Well, that’s kind of a sad thing.
Mike: But let’s get back to iPods and storage. The biggest one that you can get is 120 gigs now. Which sounds like a lot, but if you got a huge music collection it’s not enough.
AJ: Well, that’s the thing it’s always bug me about Apple’s that you can't really upgrade any of the things that they give you. You're pretty much stuck with what what they give you. I can understand why they do it, because they want to have control over all the elements and make sure that it has the longest life possible. But you can't change things.
Mike: Especially for people that have three songs.
Well, we came across a company called RapidRepair.com, and this is kind of cool. They're a company that not only fixes iPods and mods them, put different types of cases on them. They can also upgrade the hard drive inside. So for some of the iPod videos, they can actually upgrade this things to 240 gigs.
AJ: And just to put that into perspective, you know, your typical iPod might be 30 gig, 60 gig, 80 gig. This is 240 gigs, so I didn’t even know how many songs that would be.
Mike: I know. 60,000 songs or 50,000 photos or 300 hours of video. That’s huge. So, it cost a few hundred dollars to get it done. But essentially what you do is you basically pack up your iPod and you send it into them and they put that new hard drive in there and they send it back. If you want to do it yourself, they can also send all the stuff to you including the tools and the step by step construction.
AJ: And they also let you put cool different cases on as well.
Mike: Like this one.
AJ: Yeah, for example we got. And this is really if you want to geek out and have some things that no one else has, that’s it.
Mike: And the website is really easy to actually navigate. And what I like is that, they’ll upgrade all the different types of iPods. Not all of them can be upgraded to 240 gigs, but you can go into their hard drive upgrade section. And they make it very visual and all you have to do is choose the iPod you have. So for example I got an old photo iPod and here, it shows you exactly which upgrades that are available. So I can upgrade right up to a 60 gig hard drive for 110 bucks, which isn’t a bad deal. Kind of gives that old iPod some new life.
AJ: Absolutely, and exactly. If you have a device that sort of smitten to, you know you can keep it and do a little bit chip your hard drive. Pimp your iPod.
Mike: They also have iPod scratch repair kits as well, which is kind of cool. Because with a lot of these iPods, remember the clear plastic ones. You scratch the hell out of those things. And even on the back there, you can see. Look at this one here, this is by some of our camera guys, he beats the snot out of this iPod. But anyway, you can get one of these scratch repair kits as well if you want.
So if you want to pimp your hard drive on your iPod, check out RapidRepair.com. This one here is 240 gigs of storage space. You can just imagine how much stuff you can fit on here.
AJ: More than three.
Mike: More than three songs, that’s right.
