Male Speaker: We discuss the combination of inhalers about a year ago and there was a new inhaler called Symbicort. You have a lot of experience using in your practice, what is your impression?
Michael Marcus: Symbicort is a new combination medication that's now have been on the market for I think about 2 years now, which combines two medications and inhaled steroid, budesonide combine with a long-acting beta-agonists for model role.
That combination provides really excellent coverage for patients with moderate-to-severe persistent asthma. It decreases the inflammation in the lungs, well at the same time opens up the lungs and releases the bronchospasm. And one of the nice features about Symbicort as compare to the previous medication are used that there is that Symbicort has a very rapid onset of action. The long-acting beta-agonist in it for promoted role, begins working within five to ten minutes of actually inhaling the medication.
So this rapid onset off action provides my patients with the feeling that they are actually getting a medication, that's improving their lungs in a very rapid fashion.
Male Speaker: We are not saying anybody who is on, say Advair it just quits a Symbicort if it is well controlled, is that true?
Michael Marcus: If the patient is well control on Advair they should stay on Advair. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Advair. It's just to me, Advair takes a little longer to start working but once it's working both medications work well to control that same group of patients those with moderate-to-severe persistent asthma.
Male Speaker: And there is a little caution on these combinations that you should never start it in the middle of attack, is that true?
Michael Marcus: That's true. These medications are not to release symptoms of the disease. They are here to prevent symptoms of the disease. So we use those to help control and prevent symptoms.
Once symptoms occur, then a rapid acting reliever medication like Albuterol or Xopenex are the medications that needs to be added in addition to maintaining the control of medication that is progressively taking.
