Hi, this is Dr. Cary Ganz. I am just sitting here at home and it's a snowy day in the Northeast, and I thought I would give you some information on Porcelain Veneers. I get these questions all the time in my practice, so I thought may be I could help you with the answers.
So what are Veneers? Well, first, they are small fake fingernail like replacements that can be used to fix numerous things when it comes to your smile. They are basically tooth fixers. They provide what I like to call Instant Orthodontics. Now, what that means is if you are not ready to have a Orthodontics done by either using wires or design, if that's just not for you or your lifestyle, but you still have problems with your smile, Veneers just may be the answer.
Now, the nice part about Veneers is they are very kind to the gum tissue. They are one of the nicest things we do in cosmetic dentistry. So if done properly, they cause no damage to gum tissue, and they are a quick fix cosmetic solutions. In just two visits you can have the smile you have always wanted.
That's basically what Veneer looks like. Now, this is a cartoon representation, but the tooth is prepared a little bit, an impression is taken under some circumstances, and a fake fingernail like device made out of porcelain is bonded to your tooth. It can be done for one tooth, two, or six or eight or ten teeth, or more, it just depends on what your smile requires.
Now, how are they done? Well, first this depends on whether this is a No Prep or Prep Veneer. Now what that really means is, does the dentist have to remove tooth structure in order to go ahead and achieve your cosmetic goal, or can that be done without removing tooth structure.
Now, there are advantages and disadvantages to both. With a No Prep design, meaning no tooth structures removed, you can go ahead and avoid anesthesia. You can avoid tooth preparation or removal of tooth structure, and very often you need no type of temporization, no temporary caps. However, there is a limited number of times that this type of restoration can be done, and that your dentist will have to help you with when he does a true diagnostic and cosmetic design for your mouth.
Prep Veneers means that the dentist takes away roughly a half a millimeter of your tooth and replaces that with cosmetic porcelain. Now, you will need temporaries because your tooth will be sensitive during the time period between preparation and the insertion of your veneer. However, because there is a half a millimeter room, the dentist now can do amazing things with just a half a millimeter; that's roughly the thickness of you fingernail.
So the first step, once you have decided whether this is going to be a Prep or a No Prep Veneer is to go ahead and do a full diagnostic wax up and a cosmetic design and a diagnostic survey. So that you truly know, and your dentist knows, what your wants and needs are. What are you looking to accomplish? What are the potential issues that may arise? You have to understand the positives and the negatives.
Once that's done, your first treatment visit will be the preparation, the impression and temporization of your new veneers. Now, once again, this will relate to whether this is a Prep case or a No Prep case, but the teeth are either prepared or not prepared, in either case an impression has to be taken, and then you may or may not need temporaries.
Now, there are some amazing new technologies out there today that avoid the impression stage. You will see that in another video we should hopefully have in the near future.
On visit two, well, this is great, the first thing you do is get to evaluate and approve your veneers. Your dentist should show you what you will look like before these are bonded. Once they are bonded, they are done. So make sure that you get an opportunity to see your veneers before they are permanently placed. Once you have approved them, they are bonded to your teeth.
That just gives you an idea of what a Veneer looks like compared to say a lens.
When are Veneers used? They are used for chipped teeth. They could fix discolored teeth. Rotated. They can replace and repair unwanted spaces between teeth. Even crowded teeth. That's how they are used.
Here is a perfect example, that's the after and that's the before. Discolored, yellowed, relatively short teeth, very squatty, but look what a beautiful smile she now has.
