How to Use Exclusions in Cobian Backup
Robbie Ferguson: But I can’t stress enough that the importance of just having a data backup of all your stuff, only the critical stuff but one of the things in Cobain Backup that you’ll see and this is the same with many different backup packages when you’re creating that, that backup you’ll have stuff like exclusions. So that’s kind of cool because okay now I’ll find it here on Cobian just so that you can see. As we’re creating that backup it’s got a section here called special and it says exclude this files and then you can add say a directory or a file or even a mask so you can go like star.tmp so that it will omit any temporary files. The reason you want to use exclusions, let’s say you just use an example you download a lot of applications of the web and store them into a certain folder so every time you download applications to install like Adobe Reader and things like that OpenOffice.org the installer for that. You’re dropping into a downloads folder.
You can actually exclude that downloads folder from your backup because one what’s the point in taking up all the space on your backup that you don’t really need because you can just re-download it but also those things are you know if you download them again you’re going to get the newest version anyways so there’s an example why you might want to use exclusions and you can probably think of someone as well.
Carrie Webb: And that would just save you space right?
Robbie Ferguson: It will save you space. It will save time on the backups and certainly like if you have a massive, let’s say for me for example, I do all my production on this one system and if I were to backup the entire hard drive or my entire My Documents that would be just crazy because all of the temporary files every time I rasterize a video, I’ve got like six copies of that video because it’s going to be in all these different formats. In all actuality when I do my stuff all I need is the master files. So because I can always recreate the MP4 from the master, I can always recreate the FLV so I don’t need everything because that would just take a silly amount of space.
Carrie Webb: Okay.
