Rhiannon Ally: Not only we can create brand new meals out of leftovers. But you can also create other useful items from those foods scraps and containers that you would typically through out. Kimberly Danger author of "Instant Bargains 600+ Ways to Shrink Your Grocery Bills and Eat Well for Less" is here with some creative and useful suggestions for using those leftover scraps and Kim I can guarantee some of the people at home have not seen all of these ideas before they're very creative.
Kimberly Danger: Yes, I like to get creative. In fact, the American family average -- on average they'll throw away 1.3 pounds of food a day.
Rhiannon Ally: So that's a lot.
Kimberly Danger: Right, and people really focus on saving at the grocery store but you can really cut cost at home too after you have eaten those foods so like that.
Rhiannon Ally: Yeah, and I loved the first few ideas because you are creating activities for kids that mean spending less money at the craft store.
Kimberly Danger: Absolutely. Yeah in fact one of my favorite once are these juice lid magnets and these are really fun your kids can customize them with colorful paper and stickers they look great on the refrigerator and you're using something that you would normally through away with the green too.
Rhiannon Ally: That's just --
Kimberly Danger: Yes absolutely, same thing with an ice cream bucket, you know babies love to just bang on the bucket with a wooden spoon, you can decorate this with contact paper, its fun you can even start crayons in here and created with storage ideas as well
Rhiannon Ally: That's true doesn't have to just be a drum it can also be storage.
Kimberly Danger: Absolutely.
Rhiannon Ally: Now, this here, this is actually a serial box?
Kimberly Danger: It is a serial box my daughter decorated this, she uses it for her magazines and so far got pictures of her friends and what not, so that's a really fun idea and like you said it's a project to keep your kids busy and moms are always looking for those tips.
Rhiannon Ally: Yeah, cheap way to keep them busy can't beat that. So now let's talk about -- actually using some of the food we have.
Kimberly Danger: Yes. One thing that I like to do when I have orange peels is use them in my fire place as a fire starter because the oranges naturally have that oil in them so these are going to burn longer then paper, and you just stick them in your fire place so you can fire and --
Rhiannon Ally: Just let them dry out and stick them in.
Kimberly Danger: Absolutely, yeah.
Rhiannon Ally: Great idea.
Kimberly Danger: But don't throw them away. The same thing with some of these things like pickle juice and pear juice, fruit juices can be frozen in an ice cube tray once they're frozen you pop them out and put them in a zip top container label them. For example, the pickle juice can be used for marinade for pork chops.
Rhiannon Ally: That's what I was going to ask, why would you possible need pickle juice for -- but okay lovely.
Kimberly Danger: Yeah and you don't taste the pickles at all it tastes really great and then the fruit juice can be used in smoothies and gelatin salads and so for.
Rhiannon Ally: These are egg cartons this is a good one.
Kimberly Danger: Yeah in other storage idea, you can either use it in your desk with some tags, or things like that rubber bands, or you could use it in you jewelry box, you know you could put in your drawer and put jewelry, hair clips that type of things so.
Rhiannon Ally: What a great idea to separate all those earrings and things as well. Okay so this one I really like because, I think a lot of us never know what to do with the cords.
Kimberly Danger: Yeah, this is another organizational tip they really helps keep those cords organized in your drawer you can do that.
Rhiannon Ally: This is just a toilet paper roll.
Kimberly Danger: It is. You could do that with a paper towel tube as well.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay, all great ideas.
Kimberly Danger: Thank you.
