Lighting is one of the most important things to consider when taking a photo. With just a few simple techniques, you can turn an average shot into an amazing photograph. Direct light is the most basic lightning technique. This is when the light is hitting your subject straight on. The best time to utilize direct light is when it is low and most flattering like in the morning and late afternoon also referred to as the golden hour.
You in that pony, looks so cute together.
One of my favorite lighting techniques is called backlight. Basically, you position your subject so that the light is behind them and you are shooting into it. Be sure to focus your camera on the shadow areas for this technique, otherwise, your subject will be too dark. The easiest way to do this is to tilt your camera downwards towards the shadow area and then tilt back and shoot. Backlight is amazing because it cleans up your background, makes your shot light in airy and focuses your eye on the subject.
Open shade is a great way to avoid harsh direct light in the middle of the day. This will be any shaded area created by a tree or structure rather than always opting for the sun, if you move into the shade, you can get a beautiful even light on your subject.

Keep smiling girls! Come on.
Fill flash can work in any lighting situation. This is when you have a flash enabled on your camera. Fill flash is great when you are in direct sun, you want to clean up any dark shadow, it can also work in open shade to give you more contrast. In low light like when you are indoors; fill flash can give you more detail on the shot. One thing to keep in mind when using fill flash is your distance from the subject. Beyond eight to ten feet, you would not really see the effects so remember to keep it close.
Now you know the secrets to capturing the perfect shot. Thanks for watching and be sure to check out my other tips on parentdish.com.
