How to Use Moxa in Oriental Medicine
On behalf of tvlesson.com, I am Dr, Justin Newman, doctor of organs and medicine with Thebanyanholistic.com.
In this clip, I’m gong to demonstrate how to understand moxa. Moxa is a practice that involves burning a special herb on top of the needle or around the acupuncture points. The practice of using moxibustion the burning of this herb is as ancient as acupuncture. In fact, the two have been used side-by-side therapeutically for over 5000 years.
The first thing we want to do is in a very clean way, insert an acupuncture point onto our client. If you’re interested in trying acupuncture, it’s essential that you seek out a licensed healthcare provider as the practice is medical.
We first locate a point. This point can be use for strengthening the energy of the body. We can increase the energy that’s available to the point by using moxa. This is a Chinese herb, related to St. John’s Wort. The incense of which can be very relaxing. I can place this herb right on the end of the needle and then we lay it. The moxa will burn for about a minute. It will warm up the point so that the energy around it is increased. But also the incense that’s given off is very relaxing. St. John’s Wort is an herb that’s well-known for creating a relaxing effect.
Another form of moxa involves this moxa roll. It’s in a cigar shape. We can light the moxa but instead of working with a point, we can run the moxa along one area of the body, along a pathway our muscle group that may have tension and need to be released of its tension. You can use this around the points. You can also benefit the organs with this as well.
Moxa is pure yang, meaning it’s related to pure energy. So, as you use this, when compared to other herbs, you can maximize the energy that’s available to the system, which it will use for its defense for regulating the organ systems, for relieving pain, and also for helping to bridge the body, mind and feelings.
