Hey, what's up guys, this video is going to be on the benefits of 550-power cord, also known as parachute cord or just Para-chord. These are two good examples of what it looks like, I’m sure a high percentage of you watching this already know about it and having your survival kit but some people don’t. So I’m going to explain some of the benefits of it, and first off, I’ll say there is all kinds of cordage out there that you could add to your survival kit.
Well I personally think that the power cord is your best option for all around multi purpose use. This is an example of what you might find in the camping section of a regular store; this is just pure crap right here, the end. This is just cheap, I mean you could use this for something but other things; it’s not just a good idea. Also, there are different kinds of power cords, there's a good power cord and there's a bad power cord. When you go to buy your power cord, make sure you spend some little extra money and buy this power cord with the seven interior strands because—. Well first, this is what the seven interior strands looks like and what I mean by that is in the middle like if you cut off an end, let me show you on this one. If you cut off an end, there’s seven interior strands and the reason that’s good is because you can take this out and use them for different things, smaller tasks.
It’s very small and there’s seven of them in there, so—and there is an impostor 550 power cord. This is an example, actually I don’t have any because I don’t buy it but basically the interior of the imposter power cord looks a lot like the interior of this crappy cord and its just fluffy crap that its not going to do anything. The imposter power cord looks exactly the same as the good stuff on the outside, so don’t be fooled. Make sure you read the package and it might be a little extra money, you might have to go to a different store but just remember when you go to buy the 550-power cord with the seven interior strands. The reason why you need to pack this stuff in your survival kit is because of the ridiculous amount of uses it has and it doesn’t apply just to survival, it applies to everything, camping, hiking, and backpacking. There’s so many uses, I use this stuff on a weekly basis, I keep them in my EVC tactical bag, which is actually right there, and I frequently use it throughout the week for different things.
And like I said before, there so many applications for cordage in the wilderness, it’s unbelievable. A couple of the obvious ones are shelter making, also you can use it to make a fireboat to make a fire if you’ve run out of matches or whatever. You can use the smaller strands to snare animals, to go fishing with, men things, tie things up, if you make a spinner or a weapon or any kind of tool. You can make a handle with the power chord. One of the neat things I did was make a—I guess you could call it a survival necklace but it has a whistle that—this whistles waterproof. It works when wet, that’s basically what I’m trying to say, it has a clip, it’s extremely loud, a fire steel and I believe this is a P38 can opener. Basically, it’s a military issue can opener because there are different sizes. I have a larger one on my key chain.
Anyways, what I did was make necklace and all I did was braid it, and I know there’s different ways to tie the knots and everything but I just braided it. This is probably about 15 feet of cord, so you can definitely use this to make a shelter, make a bow drill, whatever and remember it has this seven interior strands inside of it, these things. Also you can make line yards like on this compass to keep around your neck, you can fasten it around belt loops, I have a small wrist like a wrist line yard on the survival mirror in case I need to keep it close by, I can have it on my hand like that. And basically what I’m just trying to get across is that there are so many uses that I can't even list them all on this video. It would be such a long video, so this is a vitally important piece to your survival kit and a couple of things I also wanted to mention is the reason they call it 550-power cord is the 550 for 550 pounds. So it’s extremely strong, this crap is not, this stuff that you might get like on Wal-Mart or something.
Also I want to show you when you cut off a piece, its going to be afraid, so you want that to stay strong and by to achieve that you need to take a lighter and singe the end a little bit. And make sure it’s not too hot when you touch it because the plastic will stick to your hands so being careful. I don’t know how good you can see but that’s nicely done. Next, what I’m about to say goes for all of your gear. You need to keep it organized, if you don’t and you need to find something quickly and in an emergency, you may not find it, it will probably just be a big hassle, so this goes for the power cord also. You don’t want it all bunged up in knots and stuff, I like to keep my stuff organized, I keep little bundles like this for ease of use in my kit and in my gear.
I’m going to show you quickly how to bundle it up like that, take the cord, straighten it out, make sure there’s no knots in it, put one end over your hand like so and start wrapping it. If it’s a lot of cord, do that around your arm and your elbow like this but this a little bit, so we’re just going to do it around my hand. And keep wrapping it and then don’t wrap it all around your hands, save a little bit, a decent amount because you’re going to wrap it around this way, sideways. And so take it, try to keep it as neat as possible and in this part, you have to wrap tight, start wrapping it around sideways like so, its going to look like that and wrap it around as tight as you can.
And then the last loop, keep it a little loose so you can tuck the end in and there you go. Nice and organized, ready to use next time you need it in a hurry. Basically my personal opinion is to go with the 550-power cord with the seven anterior strands, its strong, its lightweight; you have the seven anterior strands to use for small tasks. There is so many uses for it its ridiculous, so go out and get the 550 power cord with the seven anterior strands, not the cheap imitation crap with the cut in the middle. Thanks for watching.
