How to Use Sunscreen

The beginning of summer means many things to us, vacations, lots of fresh produce from our garden and maybe even frequent trips to the farmer's market. Hopefully it's a time to enjoy a slower pace. For obvious reasons we all spend more hours in the sun this time of year but this can be dangerous to our health if we don't protect ourselves. You see, over 1 million new cases of skin cancer are reported each year and that number is expected to rise as the protective ozone layer continues to thin. Given these statistics it is important to get into the habit of applying sunscreen each day as a part of our daily routine. It's recommended that a SPF of at least 15 be used but I use a higher number than that. Sunscreens are most effective when liberally applied before you expose your skin to UVA light so you should apply it at least 15 minutes before you go outside. And of course the more you are exposed to the sun, the more important it is to either add more sunscreen periodically through the day or use a higher SPF. Protective clothing is also very important. Hats and long sleeves can go a long way in keeping your skin from being damaged. It's also a good idea to do your gardening early and late in the day. I use sunscreen every day because I spend so much time outdoors and I know that protection is important. I hope you'll do the same this summer and throughout the year. P.
