Speaker: Okay Mikey, remember when in the workshop, we talked about centering and flushing and refocusing? Now what we're going to do is, we've worked -- I know you've worked on those and we've worked on them off the court. Now we're going to incorporate it into your actual sport routine, what you do? We're going to start, I'm just going to have you take some free throws.
If you miss a free throw, I want you to maybe step up to fall line, take a centered slow deep breath, and refocus and then retake the shot. Let's go. I will rebound for you. Okay, great! What did it feel like there when you took the deep breath?
Audience Member: I was just kind of relaxed in and efforts and focusing by hand.
Speaker: Okay, you think that's doable in a game situation.
Audience Member: Absolutely.
Speaker: Okay, good! Let's start working on that so we don't have to think about it. So if you miss the shot, you just step back, kind of do it or talk to coach, we'll have you incorporate in that practice. The other thing I want you to do is, we're going to have to simulate this little bit, but you've been on here, you missed a jump shot. You're running back down to defend this basket. Another place you could do it, okay you missed the shot, what happens sometimes when you miss a critical shot. What are you thinking?
Audience Member: I get down on something.
Speaker: Okay, you get down on something, you told me that. So I want you to miss that, pretend you miss the shot, then have you run back down court, assume a good defensive position and you've told me that sometimes what you do is you try to make up for it and get a silly foul. So I'm going to have you run back down, get in good defensive position and I want you to take a centered breath that doesn't interfere with you playing defense and waiting for the other team to get back down, because we've got to be able to do this quick. Okay, so let's try that. So you've missed down, you're going to run back on defense. So just get about half court, pretend you missed. Okay that's pretty good and then just kind of sprint down, missed a shot, D, center, okay, is that doable?
Audience Member: Yeah.
Speaker: Let's do one more. Again, if the key is that centered breath has to be slow, but it also has to be doable so they don't get a cheap basket by it. Okay, let's try it once more, miss the shots, sprint, set up, center, the defense, okay. Now last one will do till we can work on that. So I want you focusing on that, and you practice, and talk to coach, he agrees.
Okay. Last one we're going to do is little drill like centering is real easy when there is not much around. I'm going to have you do a fitness drill we talked about. Then I'm going to have to take a foul shot. Now I'm going to line up here facing you and when I point, move back forward, side step, left side step, right, we'll go about a minute. Then I'm going to ask you to go to the line, take a center and shoot. Ready? Okay, go to line, get composed, deep center breath. Great!
Okay. Now what we're going to do is we're going to do more of those drills, but the key is, that sure is helping you centering, to kind of just get composed, because it's easy to do when you're not tired. Do you get little tired of that, I mean, we didn't do as hard as usual but --?
Audience Member: Definitely.
Speaker: Okay, tell me what three things you're going to work on with centering practice that we just talked about? When are you going to use it?
Audience Member: when am I going to use it, in backboards and games.
Speaker: Okay, but how? Free throws ones?
Audience Member: By coming back in defense.
Speaker: Coming back on defense too.
Audience Member: When I am tired.
Speaker: Okay, when you're tired in fitness and you've got to suck it up. You can do that, good, let's go!
