Okay, next question from Richard Caperoso. Richard says, “I recently purchased an Acer Aspire One Netbook with Windows XP Home Preloaded. I added Ubuntu 8.10 which I love. Installation went well and Ubuntu works great, but I cannot use it wirelessly. Windows XP works wirelessly without a problem and both operating systems worked with the wired connection, but Acer sent me a few lines of code that was supposed to correct the problem but it didn’t work. I’ve been on the Ubuntu forum and tried various options without success. Also, network does not appear under Administration, all that appears is Network Tools, any ideas? Thank you.” from Richard.
A sip of coffee after that volume of talking, I need coffee sipping with music. This is where Carrie would talking, take away from the silence. Richard first of all, real quick, newer versions of Ubuntu no longer have network under your Administration menu. You’ve just got Network Tools as you’ve described. That is normal what we’ve got instead is up here you see your little network icon? What you want to do is right click on that little like two computer monitors there, right click on it and go Edit Connections, and this is going to get you what you’re looking for with regards to your network connections, so that’s kind of what you’re looking for there. So it’s changed a little bit since older versions of Ubuntu but the information is still available there.
So, going back to Acer Aspire One unfortunately, there are known issues with some of these Netbook computers, but we really want to have them working with Ubuntu, so there’s lot of projects that are out there that are working on it. I’m not sure of the model that you’re using, but there is a nice community called Aspire One 110L on the Help.Ubuntu.com community page. I’m going to send you a link to this. It’s well laid out. It goes through all the information tells you about running the Aspire One on Ubuntu, Linux or vice-versa.
What I noticed here is that, they seem to be testing it with Kernel version 2.6.28.6–generic from the Jaunty repository of all things, so I’m running intrepid. If I go into my terminal this is what I get you to do in, and you know I’m only going. I don’t have any experience with these Netbooks, but I’ll get you to just go into your terminal, go Uname-R. It’s going to tell you the version of your Kernel, and you’ll see if you compare the kernel that they are recommending to use because it works apparently with these wireless drivers versus the kernel that I actually have installed. My kernel version is quite a bit older if you will. It’s a new kernel, but I guess they are working out some of the things with the new hardware.
So, go through this site, I’m going to share the URL with you in the show notes for episode number 77, but there it is https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne110L. Give it a look, I hope that it helps you. I’m of pretty much no help other than that, point you in the right direction, here we go.
And if somebody wants to send me an Aspire One, I’ll take blue, and then I’ll help you big time. I’ll explain everything to you. I think they are really going to be working towards compatibility when it comes to Jaunty.
