Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on how to use the parental controls in Windows Vista.
So in Windows Vista, we’ll click start, control panel. Parental controls are really important today because of all the potential threats on the internet. Click on security and here you’ll find parental controls. We’ll click on that. Now, I can turn parental controls on, click here. Now, you can see Windows Vista Web Filter. It will control allowed websites, and other use. You can put time limits on it. So if we click time limits, so you see here we have a regular chart that we can set when Daisy can be on the computer. So if we don’t want her to be on at 1 a.m., 2 a.m., 3 a.m. and so on, we can block those times. If we want to allow her to time at lunch but we don’t want her to be on after 9 o’clock at night, we can block off those times. So you can go through every day of the week. You get a lot more time on Friday and Saturday and Sunday, and less time during the week or only times for doing homework and so on. When we finish with that, click OK.
Games, you can control which games by rating content or title. So for example, say there’s a big fad going on and there’s some game going around and you don’t want Daisy playing these games, you can just put in the name of the game. You’re going to set game ratings which sometimes can be a little iffy, or you can block or allow specific games. When you’re done with that, click OK.
You can allow and block specific programs. So if there are programs on the computer that you want to allow like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint or Firefox, you can specify those. You can also let Daisy use all programs.
And then lastly, you can have the activity reporting on, collect information about computer usage and you can view these activity reports so that you can see what’s been going on. So you can see time limits are on, game ratings are off, program limits are off. This way you can see at a glance what you’ve allowed, what you haven’t allowed, and you can go in and make appropriate changes.
So this is the parental controls function of Windows Vista. It’s very well done. It could help keep your children in particular safe, and that’s all there is to it.
