How to Use a Car Winch
Hi, my name is Joel Brown with 4 Wheel Parts in San Antonio, Texas and we’re going to show you how winch today.
The basic tools that you need whenever you’re doing Winch Recovery is D-Rings, Snatch Blocks and Straps and of course gloves. Whether you use some nice gloves or basic gloves, you just want to make sure that you have something that has a good leather palm in it.
Then, mount it to itself. Now you have two cables. Each of these cables pulling 8,000 pounds or whatever your winch is setup to do. With this double and pulling power, like I said, it does cut the speed in half because the cables are also traveling at the same speed. Because you’re pulling on two, it will pull something slower.
So if you got something big that you need to move, you want to move with a little bit more finesse, you can also use this to pull it a little bit slower so you can maneuver. If you're building a rock guard or something like that or moving a log to clear a trail; you pull that out. Pull through the snatch block on the other side doubling your power.
The next one, we've got the dead man. The dead man will be if you’re using the center point to change the direction of the winch cable. Let’s say that you got to a vehicle that got stuck behind the rock and there’s really no way that you can get to it to be able to pull it out but you can hook to a rock that’s in between you, you can use to redirect the direction of your winch cable.
The same thing as the double line pull, you take the snatch block, put it around the cable, you put it to your center point or wherever it may be you can use the Jeep on this one. You hook into here and this allows you to pull from this Jeep to here over to the next object that you want to pull. You can also use it when you’re trying to recover a - or debris from the trail or just to rescue a vehicle that’s not truly straight on pull from where you are.
So with this, the jeep over there pulls around me, rock, whatever we have off of this dead man to pull this vehicle out, to pull this stomp out, to pull this tree limb around if you got a large limb that you’re trying to clear the trail out or whatever you need to do.
But you always want to make sure that you have some sort of weight on your cable whether it be a tow strap, whether it be floor mat or whatever you have. You never want to leave the strap or leave the cable free to break and whip it into somebody. Safety is always first.
