On behalf of TvLesson.com I’m Steve Anthony, carpenter here in South Florida.
In this clip in Shop Tools 101, we’re going to talk a little bit about the different hammers that you might want to have in your shop. The most common hammer that you’re going to have is called the claw hammer for obvious reasons. It’s got a flat steel head and a claw at the back, which is very useful for pulling nails. Slide that claw over the head of the nail and pry it up.
Some hammers also have a textured head that helps you grab the nail when you’re driving big nails in framing operations, it’s called the framing hammer but this is just a standard variety claw hammer. As you can see most of them features a solid wood handles, some of them were fiber glass or steel with rubber handles but good old fashion hickory handle last you a lifetime.
The other most common that you’re going to come across is the ball pin hammer. This was the ball end and this is the pin end obviously. This is more used in metal working commonly the pin can be used to shape metal to be the curve shaped into a piece of sheet metal for example. But it’s not a bad idea to have a ball pin hammer lying around.
Some of the more specialized hammer, this is a tack hammer which is most commonly used in upholstery. You can place a tack in there and get it started then drive it home. You may or may not ever have a need for a tack hammer but in case anybody ever asks you what it is now, you have a pretty good idea.
This is a very useful items which really a rubber mallet, it’s used for if you need to adjust a piece of wood, give it a good whack and you don’t want to leave a scar from a steel hammer. This is pretty good for bumping things together without leaving any ugly marks. That’s just a quick over-view to some of the different hammers that you might come across in your shop.
