HOW TO USE A JACKHAMMER
Dean: Hey, I'm Dean.
Derrick: I'm Derrick, and we are from the DIY Networks Indoors Out.
Dean: And we’re going to show you how to use a jackhammer with a compressor.
Derrick: You’re probably asking, “Why do you need a jackhammer”?
Dean: Well, I need a jackhammer with the compressor most of the time I’m breaking up a concrete.
Derrick: And I can probably get away with an electric jackhammer if I'm taking up tar or asphalt.
Dean: When you rent that compressor make sure your rental company delivers that compressor to you, and also they go for all the safety instructions.
Derrick: Right, they want to teach you to how to hook up the hoses to the compressor, and to the jackhammer plus there’s a wire in your safety line you need to hook up as well.
Dean: Very, very important
Derrick: That’s really important, and I need to teach you how to install the bits. Now usually there are two bits that will come with it. One is the point that used to create big cracks on the concrete, the other one is the chisel bit that you used to break up large chunks into smaller manageable chunks.
Dean: You know once everything is hooked up and ready to go. Don’t forget your safety glasses.
Derrick: Oh, yes.
Dean: And with this you need to have ear protection. You can use this, shove them in or you can get the ones at the core of your head.
Derrick: Make sure the jackhammer stand up with your leg and between you, keep your knees bent and you don’t want to lean it away from you, or towards you. You want it straight down.
Dean: Oh! And one more thing make sure you keep your ear hoses away from the jackhammer. Rule of thumb, keep them behind you that way you wont cut to the hose. If you’re breaking up concretes, I say about 50% of the time you will find wire in there.
Derrick: That’s a sign of good form because that make sure the concrete doesn’t break up overtime, but as you take it out you need wire cutters, so take the wire cutters cut the wire that way to take out the chunks that hanged.
