Laura: Hi, Dick has just brought us up to this beautiful view to show us the value of a map and a compass, so maybe Dick you let us know what is the value is?
Dick: Alright. A map and a compass used correctly together keep you found—that is you are not getting lost.
Laura: Right.
Dick Not only that, it is lot of fun to learn and practice as you are traveling because that is what keeps you oriented all time.
Laura: So, could you give us a demonstration perhaps?
Dick: Well, what I have done here is to put my compass, this side of my compass along this blue line right here.
Laura: Right.
Dick: And that is like the line of longitude, the North-South line on a map. Then, I have turned the map until the compass needle aligns with that arrow underneath and that arrow points to magnetic North and then this line points the true North. That means the map is now coordinate to everything that you seeing, otherwise if they are out kilter, things would not jive.
Laura: So as long I can find my true north with the compass on the map, then I am basically set. I am being able to find anything that surrounds me.
Dick: Right, you got the map oriented to true North.
Laura: So let us do that. Can you show me something what is on the map that we can take a look at?
Dick: Right, okay well, see that lake over there? Yes, okay. Now where about here, now I point this piece of grass at the lake, it slide down graph, yes, that is the Lake. No question about it.
Laura: Okay, what about this little bay here then?
Dick: Alright, we just take a look.
Laura: And that is the lake.
Dick: Down the lake.
Laura: So that spot over there.
Dick: That is it.
Laura: Hey, that is like a kind of fun to do.
Dick: Right, now if you want to learn how to do this, there are different ways—one when you buy a brand new compass, you can get this book.
Laura: Who is that guys right there?
Dick: It happens to be me, or you can take orienteering course.
Laura: That would be a good idea.
Dick: Either way, to learn it yourself, that is a very good practice. Let us take a look of some other things on the map.
Laura: Okay.
Dick: What is that right there?
Laura: It is like a little community.
Dick: Yes, it is a little community okay, so here we are here with our pointer at the community.
Laura: It is that spot right there.
Dick: Low and behold, it is! Right! And notice here, that is a symbol for a bridge, if we look down there we see a bridge. Right, so we can do that all the way around this area.
