Now we are going to get a different angle on how to throw the proper jab on a punching bag. The punching bag is where you develop your strength and you learn your combination. So, you do that punching the bag and as part of the closest thing, your contour. Do an actual sparring or fight it. The only thing is you do not get hit back, so that is the fun part about it.
We are going to start first with the jab. Again, you shift the body forward—one— straight out, straight in, push-shift the body forward. As you can see simultaneously, my whole weight and my body is shifting behind the punch. So at the end of the punch, I am pushing off the back leg and I am punching at the same time. At some tendency, that way I can maximize the power behind the punch, too.
Now, the one and two on the punching bag will look something like this—1, 2, 1, 2. As you can see, immediately right after the 1, the 2 immediately follows. 1, 2, 1, 2—shift the body. 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2…Your head is also moving. It is also moving tighter. The multiple purpose as why do you want to put your body behind the punch. You throw the 1, for example at 2, the straight right cross, or the 3, or body shots.
By moving your head and shift in your body, you would maximize the power behind the punch and at the same time, your head is also a moving target instead of being a one stationary target. So, you hit harder, you will be less likely to get hit back and you maximize more power behind their punch. I said that earlier.
The main idea is to use your right jab as your range finder. It also offsets the opponent. It does not let the opponent get into his rhythm and then it creates a nice, comfortable distance between you and your opponent and you just worked behind the jab and you will follow with the right hand.
Now you can do several things with the jab. You can fake to the body, go to the head, fake to head, go to the body. You can hook off the jab. You can do various things up the jab, but the jab is basically the most important punch you will learn in boxing.
I hope you will find this boxing lesson is very useful for you. That way next time you hit a punching bag, you will look more or less like you know what you are doing.
