Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on character map. Now character map is one of those little all the way programs in Windows, click start, programs, accessories, click on the system tools, and there you’ll find character map.
Now, what is character map? Basically it shows you all the characters that are available in a given font set. So for example here we’re showing Arial. So these are all the different characters that are part of the Arial font set. And what you can do, say here is a little squeaky smiley face, now I could highlight that, I can click select, I’d say copy, now it can go here in the word pad, hit control V to paste and there’s my little smiley face.
So character map is a handy little place where you can find odd characters, special characters for different languages, you want to put in three quarters, I’ll select it and copy it, we’ll paste it in there and there it is with a smiley face. Now, as you change fonts, you’re going to get different characters. So every font is not going to have the same characters available.
So this is character map, it’s a little handy little program for inserting the odd characters and if you’re not sure which font has the characters you’re looking for, you can load them up in character map and find out. And that's all there is to it.
