Now, while we are in the site window, we are going to take some time to take a look at all the tabs across the top. So, let me take this opportunity to make this a little bit bigger again. When the site window is open and its default state, you will find a little button down here, it is actually is repeated in two different locations, one is here sort of near the middle in the lower portion of the site window and again, all the way on the left.
The button performs the same function in both places, all it does is it closes the right pane of the site window. The reason I am doing this because I want to go over the tabs just in this side of the site window right now. The tabs that are in the web content portion. The first one is the files tab, and as we already discussed it shows you the files that are inside of the web content folder, but there are other tabs here as well. So that is what we want to look at. Before I do though, I want to show you some interesting things about the files tab.
We have the name field here, and this actually puts the list of files in order by name, by clicking this again, you will change it so that they are alphabetically from the highest letter in the alphabet to the lowest rather than the other way around. We are going to put that back the way it was and take a look at this column. This is the status column, when you see a check mark here that is a good sign. It means that there is nothing wrong with the page, the page is validly parsed, no broken links or anything like that. But there is some interesting information, if you go up here and put your cursor over the line that separates the columns, you can pull this out of it and you will actually get a bigger description of what each of these icons represents. So if you had a bug here, it would mean that there was a broken link on the page and it would give you a description of what the little icon represented. So, let us put that back.
All the columns can be adjusted simply by clicking and dragging on them and in some of them you will find additional information. For example under the used column, the ones with the dots show that they are being used and if you stretch it out a bit more, it show you how many times that object is being used in the site.
We are going to close that back up and we will just click over to the external tab here at the top. This is a very interesting and useful tab because it is the spot where you can store external URL’s, URL being a web address or a link of some type and you will notice that here I got a couple of link already in here, and I have also got an email address in here. So, I could use these things on a page simply by dragging them and dropping them onto the page. In the case of this one, it would automatically write the words our education resources onto the page and create a link out of it and link automatically to this URL that is designated here.
There are three ways to create a new external URL, you can use the tools up here in the toolbar, and click anyone of these. For example, this one will create a new email address. This will create a new URL. You could use the site objects here in the objects and tools palette, simply by choosing site and then you have options here, create a new email address or a new link or you could right click or control click if you are on a Mac and choose new folder, new URL or new address.
But here is a really interesting item. Get externals used, what this means is if you open up a site that you have already got created and you want to pull all of the external references from that site into this externals tab of the site window, you simply invoke this command and it will scan the site and pull out all of the URL’s and list them here in the external tab for you. Additionally, you can find menu items for remove the unused external URL’s, get used and remove unused which does them both at the same time and a really helpful one, check external links. This will actually go out to the web and validate the links to see if they are still working and then it will return a report, so
