cheesy video, looks like came out of the 80s. Explains the problem and the application, but without any real theoretical background. To majority of non-pros f-stop doesn't mean anything, many p&s cameras are incapable of anything more than f/8. With the shutter speed at 250, the flash should be set to high-speed sync. And so on. This video probably would confuse a newbie more than educate.

This video is quite incoherent and confusing. It has two main problems - the first is that there are two separate clips in here. While the first one makes sense, the second doesn't. How exactly is it related to the first clip (and what is it about)?? The second problem is that the first clip, while demonstrating nicely the problem of having a contrasty scene with a wide dynamic range, demonstrates a very specific technique of fill flash, whereby one uses a remotely-operated off camera flash. This is totally unclear from the beginning, and is quite advanced stuff. It requires the use of special equipment (e.g. CLS or radio operated flash/camera), and deserves some elaboration/explanat ion besides casually mentioning that "you attach your flash to the light stand".

Lisa Dickson: Hello! I am your host Liza Dickson and I am on set with John Ricard. Today we are going to talk about lighting. Now you may think that lighting is not that importing but it is very important. It will make or break your shot. Have you ever been in a situation were you captured a shot and it just didn’t look right? Is it even too dark or too light, or even much worst you just did not get that shot at all? Well we are going to show you how to get that perfect shot in less than nothing. And what were trying to get right now is a picture of me and the background at the same time. Now right now, you can really see me but you can’t really see the background because the background looks too light. And a lot of times that is what happens when you take a picture, you see me but you do not see the background. And other times the opposite happens. You see the background but you do not see me. So what we are going to do today is to show you how to take that picture on the background and see perfect me. If you want that picture to look the way you want to look, me in the background, you cannot do it all at once, you have to do it step by step. Step one I want you to pretend to take a picture of the background without me. Now we will use a Nikon D3 with 24 to 120 mm lens, but you can use any camera just as long as you know how to use it manually. Our ISO is at 800 and our shutter is at 250, and we will adjust our aperture until you see a clear picture of the window. Now, we are going to take a picture at F7.1, as you can see it is not clear. It is close but no cigar. But let us try at F8, as you can see it is too bright. Now let us try at F9, it is still too bright but we are getting close. Now let us try F13, as you can see the picture in the window looks perfect. Now you might be thinking all you have to do is put it on F13 and take a shot of me in front of the window. Well that is not true. There is a little bit more to it. Right now I am going to show you what the photograph looks like at F13. As you can see, the background looks great; but I’m too dark you can’t even see my face. Now, to fix that picture we need for me to look lighter because right now the background is fantastic at 250 and 13 and we do not want to change the background. To give me to look lighter we will need to use a flash and this is the flash that we want to use. We have attached the SB-800 unto this light stand, we taped it up today but you can attach it properly on your own time. And remember always have the flash in manual mode. Now we are going to take a series of pictures, and we are going to start with the flash at its lowest power where each picture, we are going to raise the flash power. So this can be close to the perfect picture. First let us start at 1/16 power, as you can see too dark. Let us try 1/8, a little bit better but still dark. Let us try 1/4, close but we can do a little bit better. Let us try 1/2, now as you can see this is the ticket. We can start taking pictures right now.
