Mizz Natasha: Hey guys it’s the only Mizz Natasha right here on John Ricard Studio. You might recognize me from the Smooth Magazine Jamaica issue or you might have seen the beef that I have with Kim Kardashian all over TMZ, channel E and everywhere else.
Today we’re actually going to talk about how to light a headshot. You know every photographer has its own way of making everything look good and John Ricard is the best, so you guys will see, he’ll make me look beautiful and stay tuned.
The first thing we want to point out is that really the secret to a good headshot is that you don’t need a lot of light and now we’re going to install white wall and a beautiful window with perfect light and that’s all you really need for a perfect headshot.

Okay, I have great advice for all of you photographers and up coming photographers out there, please don’t ever over direct your models because all it does is it confuses us and if you’re an experienced model you pretty much know how to move and you just kind of go with your whole life and the photographer will catch your beauty just to solve that.
Even if you have an unexperienced model in some cases, don’t over direct her either because she’ll just completely be caught up in the headlights, she won’t know what to do, so just let her find her own.

You guys just witnessed a natural light headshot, but let’s say it’s night time, if it’s night time you might need that fancy equipment. We’re about to move over to John Ricard studio with all the fancy expensive stuff and he’ll show you how to get a perfect headshot with the equipment. In order to get a perfect shot, you need soft light. This right here is not going to do it because it’s too small. In order to get a soft light, you need really big light. So, I’m going to show you guys.
This is the big light, you see how big it is and it gives you that beautiful soft light that you need in the headshot. As you see, this is one of the photographer’s perspectives right now and I’m about six inches away from the lights which is very close because I can feel like getting hot, but this is how you get your beautiful soft looking light.

Right now we’re looking at the pictures and as you can see my skin looks very beautiful and soft and glowy and that’s because these lights are very close and they just give you that natural soft look that you want in your pictures. The only problem is that you might have noticed is that my hair looks like a big black blob and you can’t use any definition and a blends into the background, in one second we’re going to show you how to fix that problem as well.
Because we’re it has black we’re going to have to light a different even my face, so for my face we use this right here which is a diffused reflection. For my hair however, we’re going to be using direct reflection. In order to get that direct reflection, we’re going to be using these little light with the grids in front of them and these are for my face to give me that soft look, but we need harsh lights on the back to hit my hair and these are the lights back here and you see John Ricard is setting them up, so I get a beautiful headshot with the hair looking fabulous as well.
As you see, we’re pretty much ready to shoot, everything is set up, but if you’re still confused about direct reflection and diffuse reflection, make sure you pick up a book called “Lights, Science and Magic.

So, one of the things we want to talk about before we wrap this up is that it’s really annoying when a photographer is like talking to you and he has that camera in his face and his talking, all you see is a big black camera, you don’t really understand what the photographer is trying to say either. So, just simply put the camera down and say what you going to say like if the model has to move or whatever adjustments have to be made, just let them know put the camera out and simple.
Another thing that’s really annoying is I have noticed that a lot of photographers when they shoot like they make crazy taste this with the mouth open I guess because when you close your eye and mouth, it opens automatically or something, but simply hold the camera out of your face, close your eyes and relax and shoot it’s not that hard. Just do that and trust me a model will feel a lot more comfortable while you’re shooting her.

Male: And so the next shot that we’re doing it’s kind of a sexy shot, but it’s not sexy in the sense of like, oh look at the sexy girl it’s not like that it has a little bit of a story to it. This is going to be as if you’re coming home from work and then your wife or your girlfriend has greeted you sexily at the door in her lingerie. It’s a kind of a shot that might run with the story about like what can you do to keep the romance alive after you’ve been together for five years and we have to do a story like that or something. They’ll run a picture like this of sexy girl opening up the door.
So right now we’re about to do our light checks and work out the post, we put in a short right now so people driving by if you look we kind of out in the public right now. We don’t want everybody seeing her here in her lingerie so we here and put him in some shorts or stuff, when the time comes to do the shot, we’ll take off the pants and we’ll knock out the shot as quickly as we can.
