Hi I am Kevin Ames, I am a commercial photographer and I am at photo shop world showing you some new tips from Photoshop CS4. One of my recent assignments was to photograph women’s basketballer Tamara Stocks and it was for the cover of Atlanta sports and fitness magazine. The editors love this photograph and they called me up and said “well, could you maybe make her abs a little bit tighter” and I said “well knowing perfectly good, well I can” I said “sure it will cost a little extra money” and they said “go for it.” So I want to use this image to demonstrate a new UI feature of Photoshop CS4 and how they have made working with masks and adjustment layers much more convenient and much more discoverable.
The adjustment layers icon is still at the bottom of the layers pallet. They have added a new adjustments panel and here are all of the adjustment layers in the panel. In order to give someone abs, it is really nothing more than darkening the shadows and brightening the highlights and to do that I am going to use a curves adjustment layer. So there is a new feature in the curves adjustment layer in this adjustments panel and if I click on this little button right here it will give me an eye dropper. Let me zoom in the new command for getting to view actual pixels is now Command+1. As I mouse over the area here you will notice that I can make it brighter or darker. So I am going to grab this shadow area right here and I am just going to pull down with the tool to darken those abs shadows and that is fine I now need a new curves adjustment layer. Let me label this one and I will pull the layers pallet over and make it little larger so you can see the labels on each one. Now I need a new curves adjustment layer, here is a tip.
This arrow, right here returns you to the adjustment list. So clicking on that allows you to pick a new adjustment layer when you have an adjustment layer already highlighted. So I am going to pick another curves adjustment layer, make sure that the adjustment finger is checked and I am going to come over to this highlight right here and drag up a little bit to brighten it. So now I have got one curve adjustment layer that is for the highlight and one for the shadows.
Now, I want to show you the mask panel. I want this masks since I am only going to work on the abs the highlights and the shadows on here tummy I want this masks to go black. In the past we either have to fill them with black or choose Command or CTRL+I to invert them or go to image adjustments invert. Big lot of work, so I am going to click on the abs highlight mask and click invert right here in the panel and it automatically becomes black. I will do that with the shadows as well.
The next thing I am going to do is get the brush tool. And I can now control the brush from the keyboard. I am going to start by darkening the shadows and to do that I am going to paint with white. I will exchange the colors so that white is the fore ground color and that brush is a little bit large so I am going to hold down the control in the option keys click and just by dragging I can make the brush bigger or smaller and I am going to come in here and I am on the shadows so I am going to darken this shadows and I got a little bit of a hard edge brush so you can see where I am painting.
We will darken this one and I am going to give a little more definition right here. Let us lower the opacity of the brush just a little bit for this side and come along this edge right here.
Now I am going to do the highlights. Get a little bit smaller brush again Control+option and I will brighten the highlights in between the shadows and make them look a little bit sculpted and coming down in here. Now, this are pretty obvious and in Photoshop CS3 I would have to go in to blur and blur the mask. There is a new feature in the mask controls called feather so as I drag the feather slider over you will notice that the highlights become much smoother and I think I am only going to need it a smaller radius say 5 or so pixels and as with any other dialogue box in Ph
