How to Use the Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop CS3
The Quick Selection Tool is another way to select a part of an image and it’s really the most precise tool that you can use. So how you access the Quick Selection Tool is go ahead and it is the fourth button down on your Photoshop tool box. So go ahead and click on it if you need to you can go ahead and click on the arrow and then click the Quick Selection Tool.
Now up here on the tool bar, you got a couple different options. The first option is just the normal quick selection. It’s when we want to make a new selection. So we’re going to go ahead and select that, you can also change the brush size. I’m going to select the petals of my flower and you can see my brush size is rather small. You could go ahead and make a little bit bigger and then just click it again to take away that menu.
So I’m going to go ahead and I’m just going to simply click with my mouse and then drag and it’s going to be base it on color to select and you can see very quickly, it went ahead and figure out that I wanted to select the petals. Go ahead and release your mouse and that’s the selection.
Now for instance there are a few areas that it didn’t quite get all my petals on, you can see that there’s a tip right here. That’s a little outside the selection and you can see that there are some sky in here that I want to get and take it out of the selection. So let’s add that selection back and first of all. So you want to click on the add selection, button up here and go ahead and I’m going to make my brush size quite a bit smaller and I’m going to go ahead and zoom up.
I get a new and smaller brush. So now I can go up here and I can simply click and drag and it’s going to fix my selection so it gets that extra tip in. Let’s go ahead and zoom back out and we had an area down here that I want to take out of the selection, so I’m going to click on that third button and that subtracts from the selection.
Go ahead and live it at five and I’m going to zoom up and I can now simply click and drag and I can drag inwards on the selection as well as outwards and you can see that it went ahead and it took the sky out in between my petals. Zoom back out and you can keep going how ever much you need to get the exact precise selection that you want using the Quick Selection Tool.
