How to Use the 'Rule of Thirds' in Photography I’m Brian Cooley with a how to on talking better pictures by using the Rule of Thirds. Now your photo-taking instinct is probably to take the picture with the subject right in that middle of the shot. But that might not be the most interesting composition. Instead, try the Rule of Thirds. Imagine your viewfinder is divided into thirds—horizontally and vertically. In fact some cameras can even super impose those lines right on the LCD viewfinder. But either way, then position your subject at one of the intersection points or filling one of the top, bottom, left or right bands. It creates an interesting imbalance. And one you get to hang of it, you can help tell a story by leading the viewer’s eye across or into the photo. Best of all, it takes no technology. Every camera can do this. You just have to point it the right way.
