Charlie Piette: I am Charlie Piette from Tight Line Fly Fishing Company and today we're going to be tying Ross Mueller's Yellow Fox. This has been a really interesting spring as far as water levels are concerned, and streamer fishing, particularly in the south-west part of the state has been really good.
So, today we're going to tie Ross's fly. The materials for this fly are just a standard streamer hook in a size 6 and 8. This happens to be 6, black glass beads, that will be the head of the fly. The wing and the tail are yellow merbau, the over wing is fox squirrel, and the body is just gold diamond thread.
So I'm going to start that fly by putting the black bead on, putting on the thread. And the tail is just a little clump of yellow merbua, if you can find a piece that you can just even the tips right on, you can just tie the tips in, like that, there is the tail. We'll make the body by just wrapping forward some gold diamond braid.
It's a great streamer pattern particularly on brighter days super easy to tie and it just fishes well. We're going to stop the diamond braid right there to leave a little leeway for the wing material. The under wing is just another piece of merbua, you can find a big fluffy one, kind of a ideal for this wing, same as the tail, just try to even out the tips.
Now, we're ready to put on the over wing, which is just a small fine clump of fox squirrel tail, and ideally the finer that hair you can find the better, otherwise it tends to get a little bulky by the head. I'm just going to tie that in over the top of the merbau.
The head tends to get a little bulky ,just because of the amount of materials that are behind the bead, so to make for that, make that a little more stream lined, I'll put some dubbing behind the bead, here I'm using just yellow light bright dubbing. So I'll dub right behind the bead, and then take some Velcro and coil that dubbing out, so I'll fold this back.
Now, we're just going to finish the fly -- we're finishing just behind the bead. I would by combing out like that, and the light bright dubbing is really nice because it's a fairly long synthetic material. So if you take a dubbing brush to it, you can get it to flow back. And there is the finished fly. Ross Mueller's Yellow Fox.
