Joe Dionffer: There are many ways to make decisions. Some people think they make decisions but really don't, some make decisions but only some of a time and others consistently make decisions but are consistently late. Very few players consistently make decisions early enough to reach their full potential. The fourth part of this video offers a simple yet highly effective learning device to help players make decisions quickly and painlessly. The idea is that when a player calls the decision out loud and clear it creates a pattern of making a commitment. In this learning situation louder is absolutely better. We saw some examples earlier in this tape; let's take a look at some more.
Now when there are numbers, so you call out down line cross court, whatever you call out, make it a verbal cue, so we help them.
In this section we will focus on what are called binary decisions with just means narrowing your options down to two choices since when it comes to decisions the simpler the better. The examples we have selected all use a ball machine and different colored balls. If you like this concept you will be able to easily expand these samples into dozens and dozens of games and drills of your own. Try them with a ball machine or with feeding. Simply assign the yellow balls as one shot and the yellow and orange ball as another. The first variation is down the line or cross court.
So this is down the line, right? You are going to mix them up for me or what? Cross court, cross court. Right, you guys with me. Down the line, just turn it off for a second. Cross court.
The second example is simple. It calls for one of the colors to be for back spin and the other for top spin. Take another look.
Now what about back spin and top spin. Right, what do I do? All yellow is back spin, yellow and orange top spin. You want to put some more balls in or it will be okay, alright. Yellow and orange top spin. I owe you Mark. Back spin, back spin, top spin, back spin, back spin, top spin.
Now what about adjusting this concept for group lessons or team work outs.
If you have a line of kids and you want to do this as a line drill with a few of them waiting, have those in back call it out. So let's add three more people, come here. Too many times in drills if there are lines people are waiting looking like you know they are in the barber shop waiting for a hair cut. Now what you want? You guys back off a little bit each person is going to hit two balls. One ball in sequence is said not to be good because there is no opportunity for an adjustment. So you guys call out before the ball bounces on my side whether it is back spin or top spin, fairly advanced drill. If it is all yellow it is - correct, if it is yellow and orange it is? Thank you, I want to hear it loud. Here we go.
Next up in line. Back, back, next up, good shot, back spin, top spin, good girl. Back spin. Come on you guys speak out, top spin.
