The next letter reads, Dear Genevieve, this 15x17 room, that's small, doubles as our family room and home office space. I would like to find a fresher arrangement that maximizes the space and shows out the fireplace mantel. I am also looking for something to replace the T.V stand and file cabinet.
Alright, let's have a look. Now what you've got going on and it's a lot. This is an explosion of color and pattern, my goodness. Look at all this stuff. What I going to suggest is, if you can nominate this room as solely a family room, I would do so. There is no place for an office. And office clutters up any space that it shares itself with. So let's clear it all out and start it over.
I love your wall color. It's really soft wheat gold, that's really beautiful. I would definitely keep that. What I don't know, is why you're covering up the fireplace with the back of a couch. This should be the focal point for the whole room. Get some kind of small sectional with a tight little shade and so that you can see over it, and you can face this right towards the fireplace.
Additionally, I would bring in a couple of chairs to flank on either side of that fireplace. What this does is, it brings your eye even more focused to that focal point. A mirror above, to balance out fire and water and some beautiful photographs, some vase, flowers something on top to create a small display maybe three, four things not 25. A small coffee table with a vase and some kind of display, floor to ceiling curtains are a must.
Any chance you can get to make a window look bigger than it is, take that opportunity. Don't tack these up on the molding, it makes the windows seem a lot small than it is.
The room definitely needs a bigger area rug, to really focus the energy in one little spot. Ivories and blacks in every room, I use these because they are nice contrasting colors and they're really clean. So no matter what the palette, try and find room for these in your access.
Now, let's break it down. First thing is, we need to clear everything out of this room. There is too much stuff. We need to make this fireplace the focal point. How do we do that? We tame down the display may be bring two or three nice photographs, a vase of flowers, an oversize mirror to balance out the fire, and also giving two high back chairs to flank the fireplace. This directs your eye to where you want it to go.
A big area rugged has a nice little tight sectional with the shade and a coffee table. And all of a sudden there is place to land in this chaotic room. A place that is focused, and a place that's easy to talk to people in. I hope that's the configuration that works for you.
