When you just watched Colindy(ph) move in towards the net, you may have noticed that her racquet motion was extremely similar on each shot. Key number five tells us to volley with out feet and not our hands. Of course, yes our hands control the racquet and are involved, but we must remember the time factor described at the start of this program.
When we come to the net we certainly rush our opponents, however our own reaction time is also drastically reduced, active footwork to get us into position is critical. In this section we will take quick snapshot looks at various volleys, with each and everyone effective footwork and position is critical, take a look.
First are low volleys in order to keep her wrist fairly firm, Colindy moves into position and tries to bend enough to get her hips below the height of the ball at contact. Second are wide volleys, in this situation Colindy must move quickly and keep her racquet head under control. A big swing at a wide volley almost guarantees missing the shot.
Now Colindy is demonstrating what to do with short weak shots. The best approach is to close in quickly and contact the ball above the height of the net to angle it away for a winner. In this sequence, Colindy demonstrates hitting one of the toughest volleys of them all, the high backhand volley against the ball that almost goes over her head. Again, quick footwork combined with simple and efficient racquet control are the keys to managing this difficult shot.
The last example we will demonstrate is what Colindy has to do when she hits a deep ground stroke and then slides or sneaks in to hit a mid-court volley. The biggest mistake with this shot is swinging too much and losing control. Footwork and positioning again are keys in this situation, as Colindy is now demonstrating.
These five examples are just that, examples of what can happen at the net and what to do about it. The overview is that tennis is an open or unpredictable sport where movement, balance, quick reactions, and ball control are all keys to success. In fact, if you were to key in on one specific issue, I probably say that controlling the racquet and moving to the ball with your feet are critical.
