David Epstein: Alright, early spring time, snow is gone, time to get the lawn in shape. We have got a lot of things we can do to get this lawn green, we want to keep the weeds out, and we want to keep the crabgrass out. So let us talk to Henry Patt and see what we are suppose to do early in the spring. So we have got a lot of products here, and some of these are organic, some of these are not organic and I do not want crabgrasses here, what do I do?
Henry Patt: Alright, to prevent crabgrass; you want it encapsulate or cover up the crabgrass seed and by putting the crabgrass, prevented down here. Earlier in the spring, when you spread this it is going to cover up your seeds of the crabgrass so that it should prevents your crabgrass from coming in this year. If you do it too late in the season, it is not going to help because it is not going to encapsulate the whole organism that is now growing of the crabgrass.
David Epstein: So if I want to go organic, these are some of the products that work pretty well?
Henry Patt: Yes. This is a weed control, it is actually Corn Gluten and they found it by putting this down and that has a good control on the crabgrass, it also encapsulates the seed and prevents it from growing. This is a terrific product for lawns; it is derived from the chickens and the roosters.
David Epstein: We do not want to be putting lime down on the lawn which is going to help and do we do that on the parts of the northeast or is it specific to one particular state?
Henry Patt: Basically, here in the northeast which is all of New England, you want to put your lime on, it is so very acidic, and it binds up the nutrients such a lawn roots we have been looking for. So, by adding the lime to the soil, it neutralizes the soil, it makes it sweeter, so now the roots of the lime can now get nourishment and grow well.
David Epstein: Do a little bit of raking get your lawn cleaned up before you put the fertilizer down, do not put it down if it got a lot of leaves there, you want that fertilizer as well as the crabgrass prevent it on the lime to really work into the lawn. Stick with us and we will have a green lawn for you all summer long.
