Hello, my name is Greg Reveles with Renorr Dynamics. Today I am showing you how to properly clean your wood or composite deck. Now, let's move to the washing. The first step in washing your deck is to obviously, turn on your pressure washer, shut off the water, pull the cord using the choke, much like a lawnmower, start the pressure washer, turn the water on, and then take your hose up the stairs and to the farthest corner of the deck.
You want to use a very smooth and even motion, stand with your feet about shoulder width and all you are going to do from left to right with the cleaning wand, is to keep an equal distance. Point the wand down towards the wood and move, like a left to right and right to left motion, sort of like a pendulum. You don't ever want to start and stop. The reason is because you'll make what we call cut marks.
As you are performing your steady left to right motion, be sure that you follow the direction of the grain, you don't ever want to wash perpendicular to the grain. Next, you want to look at cleaning the handrails and the vertical balusters or some people call them spindles, it's much in the same way.
You are going to keep equal distance, try and be perpendicular, keep the tip and the water, the fan spray perpendicular to the surface that you are cleaning. And you want to clean all of your surfaces in a nice, steady, smooth motion, cover all sides of the wood, all four sides of your handrails, your balusters.
One way of doing this is to just reach over, the handrail and wash them outsides of the balusters and the posts. So if you have stairs on your deck, those usually are much more cramped and difficult. So, this is a very short one, it comes in handy say, may be about 12 inches. Again, this is just to facilitate the washing in tight corners.
We have now completed our deck washing. It's looking real beautiful, we want to let it dry for a few days and we'll come back and apply a wood preservative.
