Hi there, I am Cory from WikkidThings.com, that’s W-i–k-k-i-d, don’t get it twisted. And we’re going to do a tutorial today, which shows you how to whiten someone’s teeth in Photoshop, of course. And this is going to be a pretty quick tutorial, let’s just jump right into it.
Got your Adobe Bridge here, or of course you can just always go Adobe file open and find your file. Whatever turns you on. And so I got this picture here of John McCain, not my favorite person in the world, but I’m going to do him a favor today and whiten his teeth a little bit because they are looking a little bit suspect. So, all right, let’s just get started a real quick preface to this, you’ll see some other You Tube tutorials where they go through this very long and complicated, convoluted process just to whiten someone’s teeth they’ll usually use like quick masking, and fill their teeth with white and then paint out the spaces between the teeth, so, that’s just way, way, way too much work.
So, I’m going to this quick and easy, just the way I like it, and just go ahead zoom in a little bit, and just take your lasso tool, and just kind of select around his teeth there. So, unlike a lot of other methods where you have to get in very close, very detailed, I don’t mind that much if we grab some lip, some skin, it’s not the end of the world. So, you don’t worry about it too much, I mean you don’t want to grab his whole face or anything, but as long as you just grab the general shape you should be all right. Now let me just preface this by saying the one exception is if you have a photo that’s kind of extremely under developed, and if their skin tone is very extremely yellow, because we’re trying to get rid of the yellow on the teeth. So if their skin has a lot of yellow tones, then it could be an issue. But for 99% of the photos you’re going to run across, this method will work fine as long as their skin tone is pretty natural, pretty normal.
So, all right, so I’m just going to go image adjust, selective color. Now, obviously we don’t want to change the reds because that’s his skin tone, it’s in the red range. So, I’m going to go to yellows, which is what we want to get rid of, I’ve got my methods set to absolute. I’m going to go ahead and drop all the yellow out of the yellow range, and as you can see that already made a pretty big difference. I’m also going to drop a little bit of black, maybe about -15, little bit of cyan, about the same, little bit of magenta, just de-saturate it a little bit basically. I’m just going to go down on my whites now, and again I’m going to get rid of all the yellow, maybe a little bit more black, and I’m going to hit Ok. And you can see already that looks a lot, lot better, but his teeth were really, really pretty yellow. No offense to him or anything, but they were.
So, we’re going to go ahead and do a second round of teeth whitening here. And I’m going to go back to my yellow range again, like I said, make sure you’re not just staying on reds, or it’s not going to work. Switch to yellow, and I’m going to drop the yellow all the way down again, and maybe drop the black just a tinsy bit more as well. I’m going to go white again and maybe drop this a little bit more there. And just a little bit of black, I’m not going to drop it all the way because it starts to look unrealistic after awhile. Which is the main problem that I have with a lot of the other teeth whitening tutorials that are on You Tube is it just starts to look unnatural. They make it just look so gleaming white, and there’s not natural texture to the teeth anymore. With this you keep all the natural texture of the teeth, we’re just getting rid of the yellow. So, I’m going to hit Ok. I’m going to drop this back down to a 100%, unselect this, and here it is in the beginning, and there it is at the end; beginning, end. And that’s it. Quick, easy and effective, and you’ve just whiten this teeth. I can’t really do anything about the rest of this face but you know, that’s not my problem. So, that’s your tutorial, other than that, check out WikkidThings.com. Stay tuned for more tutorials, more good stuff coming your way, and thanks for tuning in, later!
