How to wire a Switch Outlet Combo Circuit
Hi I am Mark Donovan from HomeAdditionPlus.com and today I am going to show you how to wire switch outlet combo circuit such as the outlet is controlled by the switch. Before beginning any wire circuit however I want to make sure that you really should need to turn off power to the main circuit breaker for the electro box that you are going to be working with otherwise you may risk dangerous shock or even death.
So the first step we want to do when wiring up is switch all the combo circuit as we want to bring the power into the box and I have 14-2 wire here that is coming into the bottom of the box and I have another 14-2 roman type cable coming in from the top of the box this goes to feed the —the light. What I have done is first of all I have twisted the grounds together the bare copper wires and I have attached a green because they call it green wire knot to twist them together and made a loop at the end of the copper wire which will attach to the outlet in a moment.
In addition, I have power that will connect to the outlet and I have a feather that will go up to the light. All of the return wires or white wires are the one more coming from the right the one white wire that is coming from the power feed and I also have a pigtail of wire that will connect to the outlet. But the first thing I am doing is attaching the ground wire to the outlet fixture itself. Another is like I made a loop that is rotated in a clockwise direction so that when I just tighten up the wire under the screw, it snags down onto the —onto the copper wire.
The next one I am putting on is the black one wire coming from the Romex power fill. And it is attaching to the brass screw on the side of the switch itself. And again we just tighten this up with this, tighten up the screw. On the other side of the switch outlet circuit, we are going to attach the black wire that fits the light switch itself or this fuse that lights itself. I am going to connect it to the other side of this switch outlet circuit. You can do either one there is a tab that connects either terminal screw. Does not matter which one we are going to pick out the one and again noticed I put the wire on such that it goes in a clockwise direction so that when I tighten up the screw, the wire wraps around the screw. So this when you turn on the switch power of flow from one side of the switch to the other and then feed power to the light.
So last thing I have had to do is I have to tie it together the return wires associated with the power on its cable fit as well as the return wire that is coming from the light source. And in addition I have attached the pigtail white wire such that I have to have one white wire wrapped around the silver screw associated with the switch outlet circuit. Again we put that on a clockwise direction and tighten it up with our screwdriver. So that is it for wiring switch outlet and now look to the light, swap with the light fixture itself I am going to take the black wire which is the hot wire who is feeding electricity to one side of the light fixture, I am going to wrap it around the screw and then tighten it up. We are wrapping around d the brass screw and then we attach the white wire to the silver screw. So now what we have to do is attach the light fixture to the box and the switch outlet to its box and we will be ready to give this a try.
So now that we have attached the switch outlet to the micro box and put the light open to our light fixture, we can give a quick test and as you can see here the switch outlet is now working both the element and the light and fixture itself are both controlled by the switch. So that is it for wiring a switch outlet combo circuits such as the outlet is controlled by the switch. If you have other home improvement questions visit us at HomeAdditionPlus.com today.
