The writer asked, is a memoir fiction or non-fiction? It is non-fiction. Does that mean that you should have a book proposal? It depends on the agents. Some agents will say, just give me the first three chapters. Other agents will say, I want to see what your market looks like. I want to see how sellable this is. For Eat, Pray, Love, she was a very well known writer. All she had to do was call her agent and say, I have this book and the agent went, “Yes, sure.”
For the rest of us, follow the guidelines on literary agent sites because they will tell you if we like memoirs, we want X, Y, Z. Some will say, book proposal, and others will say first three chapters but it is non-fiction. Memoirs is always non-fiction because remember it’s a story about your life, yes, or one aspect of your life. It’s not your autobiography. It is a turning point in your life, a transformational moment in your life. For Eat, Pray, Love it was when she found herself on the floor in her bathroom curled up in a fetal position with this wonderful gorgeous house and this gorgeous successful husband, sobbing and she said, “I can’t do this anymore”. I can’t do this anymore, that was the transformational moment that that entire story wrapped itself around. Now she could go back to her childhood, she could predict what the future was going to bring, but the spine of that memoir was that scene where she ended up rocked bottom and climbed up.
