Hello and welcome to web and informant. t.v. I am David Strom your host and reviewer. Today we look at altiris, work flow, solution from semantic that can be use to automate many common task. It does so with an innovative graphical applications development environment similar to how you would construct a flow chart in Visio. And you can see here a bunch of pre built sample projects we have at our disposal, you can down load from the altiris juice website. You can use work flow solution to automate almost any kind of task, process that can run unattended and workflows that requires some kind of end user interaction. Let us show you around, the sample job candidates screening application here. While we are not going to show you how to build work flows, we will hit on a few highlights of the product.
First of is smart enough to show you logic brakes as you construct your flow click on one of the lines connecting the boxes and hit delete and you will see the warning message and when you right click on the surface you can see what the actual logic brakes are. Next the software can interact with a lot of different data sources. We click on the button for create integration library give it a name and it will lunch a dialogue of chooses and you can se that there is a lot to choose from here. We will pick one that says table generator to create an integration with the data base table. Okay sequel provider, choose connections string. Test the connection, choose the table, and we click next twice to populate and compile and close it. It was that simple we have now a connector to that particular table in that particular data base.
The software works both as a design tool and it includes a debugger to test the work flow logic, as you design it to run a project you press S F5 and then run the debugger. What is neat here is that the server can run many work flow as once and handle thousands of decisions in an hour. The work flows could also be publish and started a variety of ways that can start automatically in a schedule that can monitor an email box or a folder in a network or even a fax machine that can also be a publish as a web service that is just like an application that sits and waits in the network until called upon.
The first time you build a new project it might take a minute to populate it then when you are done you published the server on your own network. There are multiple ways to view the work flow project org space a diagrammatic one and a textural one called the browser view that you see here controlled by buttons at the bottom of the screen. What is the difference? The browser view is a bird’s eye view of all the process and allows you to see from top to bottom the way the work flow go. You are probably going spend most of your time in the diagram view as you build your ap. Well, that is a different component that comes with your own embedded logic, making it easy to develop things on top of them. Go to the bottom of the component list and it to work flow components and we will choose the approval work flow that can be used to accept and reject stuff. Drag this on to the desktop, wire it on to the last portion of the model, and now we have added the separate approval step in our process. There are tons of alteris specific components that can extract information form the data repositories, such as the central management data base and other asset management collections. You do not have to mess with these as you can see there are more detail if you click on the component.
What do I like about the product? There is no program you requiring to build complex logic model and all you have to do is drag and drop components and connect of data sources that have guide you trough the steps. And you can build some very complex models within models like creating subroutines that you can reuse over and over again.
