Now we are going to be talking about our positioning in the goal. More of my theories of playing goalie is you must stop the easy shots. Let the other team only score on good shots. So in order to achieve that goal, you must have good positioning in the goal. Once again, you have your good stance with your stick up. But you should be in the middle of the goal, relative where the ball is and a half-step to your off side. Most shooters like to shoot to the off side.
Now you ask how far, how should I play? That is personal decision but I think the closer you play to the goal line, the more consistent you are going to be in the goal. Some players like to play out on a high ark. The only problem with that is they can get beat with cross crease passes. When you play back, you are always going to keep your position. So now I am in the goal, all the ball is in my feet back on the goal.
When a shot is taken, I am always going to step, step towards the shot. If the ball is shot to my right side, I am always going to step with my right foot, and follow up with my left foot. I always want to end up just like I started out. Once again, ball is on my right, it is going to be a two step pattern, one, and two. A common mistake people make is they take too large of a step. If I take a very long step, when I step to my heel, it lowers me down. So, I want to take a short step, a quick step. One, one and I am ending up in the position I started in. If the shot is to my left, I am going to step with my left foot first, one, two attacking the ball.
