We are going to show you how to be an expert in cake cutting.
You are going to need three tools, you are going to need your cake, you are going to need your knife and you are going your stock of plates, all of which are very closed by.
I have one more tool here which is a bin of hot water, should we need it.
I am going to show you today how to cut the circle out of the center of the cake and cut around it so that you get the most slices of your cake possible.
This is a smaller cake but we are still, even though it was just about seven inches, we are going to get 12 or 14 slices out of it. If I wanted to do eight slices, I could go traditionally around like so. So, I am going to go in and slice a circle right around the center. Twisting my knife as I go, pull my knife out, wipe it clean and I am going to start cutting around the cake.
With each slice, I like to just pull it right up on my knife. Balance it if I need to on my hand and put it on the plate.
You are going to need to use a straight edge knife; that is going to be your best bet. Not a serrated knife with the wavy edge, and the thinnest blade possible. That way not too much is going through the cake.
You are going to make a clean slice, pressing down with one swift movement. I do not like to use cake server. I find it much better to balance the cake on my knife. If you use a cake server, it tends to be too wide and starts to tear apart the rest of the cake, so this will get lots of the nice clean slices and you can just lift them up like so putting them on to the plate as you go.
I like to make sure that my cake is cold and my knife is warm. If my knife starts to stick I will put into my basin of hot water and I will start to warm it up and wipe it off, making sure it is dry, you continue cutting now your cake.
A cake like this is really interesting to slice because although it is frosted on top, it is really soft in the center and you want to be gentle with it.
Size up your cake before you starts slicing it. If it is a frosted cake all around and it looks hard, it probably is and you are going to want more motion and more emphasis going down with your hand.
Sagged from the first couple of slices, if they are not coming out clean, go faster. It is probably that the crumbs are sticking to your knife.
If you have a larger cake that is square, you can just go ahead and cut slices down like a hatched pattern. The other way we could have slice this cake rather than a circle in the center and slices around which is to go straight across and you get diamond cut slices of cake.
So thanks for watching us to teach you how to be an expert in cutting cake.
